Three Peaks hikers raise over £10,000

Thirty-six hikers took on the Surrey Three Peaks challenge on Saturday 5 September, raising more than £10,000 to support Age UK Surrey’s vital services for older people across the county. 

The group completed a demanding 25km route with 1,060m of elevation, scaling Box Hill, Leith Hill and Holmbury Hill as part of the fundraising challenge. 

The challenge also helped promote Age UK Surrey’s Age Better Together in Surrey campaign, encouraging people to take on a new challenge while highlighting the importance of healthy ageing. 

“It was wonderful to see so many people come together for this challenge. We are so lucky to be surrounded by the beautiful Surrey Hills, which provided the perfect setting to connect with nature, support local people, and enjoy the positive impact that spending time outdoors can have on our wellbeing,” said Tori Haines, Fundraising Campaigns Coordinator. 

Funds raised from the event will help Age UK Surrey provide important services and projects, including specialist dementia support, befriending, information and advice, and planning for later life. 

Age UK Surrey would like to thank everyone who took part, donated and supported the walkers, helping to make the day a memorable success. We’d also like to thank Back on Track Fitness for guiding, motivating, and supporting participants throughout the route. 

The challenge highlighted how people of all ages can make a difference in their local community. As the hikers showed, whether aged 15 or 80, taking on a challenge can help support people who need it most and contribute to ageing better in Surrey. 

“I spoke to a hiker who said they had never considered themselves particularly sporty when they were younger, but that this challenge had shown them they were capable of more than they thought. This is exactly what we are trying to achieve through our Age Better Together in Surrey campaign: empowering people to challenge perceptions of ageing, build confidence, and embrace new opportunities later in life,” said Tori Haines, Fundraising Campaigns Coordinator.
