International Day of Older People

Published on 29 September 2022 09:21 AM

The 1st of October is the International Day of Older People (or IDOP for short), an awareness day first created by the United Nations as a way of highlighting and recognizing the contribution of older people across the world.

Here in Bristol, we’ve been marking IDOP with the start of our Celebrating Age Festival which runs for the whole month of October and aims to challenge stereotypes about older people and encourages everyone to try something new and make connections in their community. You can find out more about CAF here.

This year the theme of IDOP is focused on the resilience and contribution of older women.

At Age UK Bristol we work with so many inspirational older women, including service users, volunteers, trustees and our friends and colleagues across the city. We have many examples of strong older women who have contributed to their communities from our Age Proud Bristol campaign to our volunteers, to our service users – older women in Bristol have a huge impact. Let’s come together and celebrate the considerable contribution older women make in Bristol every day.

Share your story of an older woman who inspires you. You can join the conversation today on social media, tag @ageukbristol, and use the hashtags to share your story #IDOP22, #SheWillBeHeard
