Veterans Take Aim - Bringing Community Together in Carmarthen

In the heart of Parc Dewi Sant in Carmarthen, inside a beautifully repurposed old chapel, an exciting new community venture is already bringing people together in a powerful way. Go Sports recently launched an air rifle range, creating a welcoming space for newcomers and experienced shooters to develop their skills, and it’s quickly become a hit with one group - local military veterans.

On Thursday 2 April, Military Veterans Club Cymru, supported by our dedicated team at Age Cymru Dyfed, hosted a special event to celebrate camaraderie, connection, and a little friendly competition. Veterans travelled from across West Wales to take part, including members from Links Veterans in Llanelli, the Pembrey Veterans Club, and evenas far afield as Aberystwyth.

The day wasn’t just about competition, it was about community. The event was attended by Welsh Veterans Commissioner, Lt Col (Rtd) James Phillips, alongside representatives from Veterans NHS Wales, whose vital work continues to support veterans dealing with service-related mental health challenges. Local cadet organisations and veterans’ families also joined, making it a truly inclusive and supportive gathering.

Throughout the day, participants took turns on the range, testing their precision and enjoying a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. A buffet lunch provided perfect opportunity to catch up, share stories, and strengthen connections between groups.

As the afternoon unfolded, the competition intensified. After all scores were counted, an impressive five shooters were tied for first place. To determine the winner, a tense “closest to the bull” playoff was held, this time requiring participants to shoot standing, adding an extra level of challenge and showcasing true marksmanship skill.

Those who demonstrated best control and technique rose to the occasion, and medals were proudly awarded by the Veterans Commissioner to the top three shooters.

The standout performer of the day was Jim, an incredible 86-year-old REME veteran, who took home the top spot. His achievement was a testament not only to his skill but to the enduring spirit and resilience of the veteran community.

Events like this highlight the invaluable work of Age Cymru Dyfed' veterans team. By creating opportunities for connection, activity, and shared experience, they are helping to combat isolation, support wellbeing, and celebrate the contributions of veterans across the region.
