Comfort's Journey to Rediscovering Independence

Published on 08 November 2023 10:00 AM

Meet Comfort, a remarkable 74-year-old who reached out to us for support earlier this year. She came to us following a recommendation from a neighbour seeking assistance with her finances.

Comfort's story reflects the experiences of many individuals in these challenging times. Her fixed income no longer covered her increasing bills, and she found herself grappling with the rising costs of essential services. Yet, she never allowed these difficulties to diminish her spirit.

Comfort: "Money is tight; everything is getting more expensive every week, and getting around is not as easy as it used to be. I have a walking stick now, and to be honest, I wouldn't say I like using it. I have been leaning on my two children a lot recently, and I hate to ask them for anything. So, I try to do as much as I can manage. They have their own challenges."

In the face of financial hardship, Comfort displayed remarkable resilience and the determination to seek help. She turned to us, looking for a lifeline amidst the economic uncertainties of today's world.

We were able to provide immediate support by contributing £200 towards her energy bills, alleviating the burden that had weighed on her for too long.

Comfort: "It all happened very quickly; I was so pleased. I thought at the time that that was probably as much help as I was going to get. I was surprised to learn about the other ways I could get help."

Comfort's journey didn't end with financial relief; she began attending our Activity Centre, where our lunch service became a comforting and affordable option, costing only £2 for two courses.

Comfort: "I feel much better using the service. The world moves so fast, and I'm glad there's someone to explain it all to me. I would be lost otherwise."

But we are not stopping there. Looking ahead, we are eager to support Comfort in her pursuit of digital skills. Comfort has expressed her desire to learn how to use the Internet more effectively to keep up with the news and her family overseas and shop from home.

Comfort: "I'm looking forward to learning how to use the computer. I think it will make a huge difference. It seems to be for my neighbour who has learned how to order everything he possibly can from Amazon."

We will be guiding and assisting Comfort through our digital service, ensuring she gains the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the online world with confidence.

Stay tuned as we'll be keeping up with Comfort to see where her journey takes her next.
