Yvonne's story

A trip or fall can have a devastating effect on a person’s confidence.  Yvonne Rooney is 62 years old and is an incredibly active mum, grandparent and community volunteer.  She recently had a fall which knocked her for six.

‘I woke up on the floor in a panic.  Earlier that night, I felt dizzy on my way to the bathroom and the next thing I remember was slowly coming to on the floor, not really knowing where I was or how I’d got there.  I crawled to the bedroom, found my phone and managed to call my daughter who dropped everything for me.

‘My daughter arrived and got me to the hospital.  I was there four nights and remember looking in the mirror and wondering if I would ever be me again.  I knew that something about me had changed.  It was my confidence.  It had gone.

‘I called Age NI about a Personal Alarm as soon as I got home.  My Dad actually has one too.  For a moment, I felt older than my 62 years.  That horrible feeling of having changed came flooding back.  Then it passed with the realisation that I needed a little extra support and I shouldn’t be afraid to ask for it.  The alarm was installed and tested in no time at all and I was also able to access a grant to help me pay for it.  It’s fantastic that there is some financial support available for some people to get this help.’

‘The Personal Alarm has been literally life-changing.  I am not alone any longer and I feel comfortable in my own home again.  That tiny little button has kick-started the confidence I took for granted for so long.  It has also given my children peace of mind – we see each other often but they can’t be with me 24 hours a day.  I can’t wait to be back on my feet again properly, and I’m looking forward to getting back into my volunteering work.   I know it won’t be long before I’m looking in the mirror and seeing the old me looking right back again.’
