Age NI statement on launch of Health Committee report on its inquiry into the Impact of COVID-19 in Care Homes

Published on 03 February 2021 12:00 AM

The NI Assembly Health Committee launched a report on the impact of COVID-19 on care homes on 1 February 2021.

Linda Robinson, Age NI CEO, said:

"COVID-19 continues to affect everyone involved in a care home, including residents who live there, relatives who want to visit and spend time with a loved one, as well as the staff who deliver care and support in very challenging circumstances. We are all very aware of the devastating and painful impact of COVID-19 on the lives, health and wellbeing of residents, their family members, and social care staff.

Age NI welcomes, therefore, the launch of the Health Committee’s report on the Impact of COVID-19  on Care Homes and, in particular, its focus on the rights and protection of older people; safe and meaningful  visiting; recognising the skills and value of social care staff; and the funding and reform of adult social care.

We believe action must be taken now to ensure care homes are adequately resourced, supported and prepared to respond to the pandemic in the weeks and months ahead and our system of health and social care ready to meet future needs focused on improving outcomes for older people.   We call on the Department of Health to ensure the Committee’s findings are taken on board and recommendations progressed as a matter of urgency.”
