Could you host our Information and Advice team?
We are looking for welcoming community venues across Plymouth to host our free Information and Advice sessions for people aged 50 and over.
Could you host Age UK Plymouth?
As part of our Information and Advice service, Age UK Plymouth is expanding the support we provide in local communities across Plymouth.
Our Information and Advice team provides face-to-face guidance and support on a range of issues. The team specialise in maximising income for people of State Pension age and over, checking benefit eligibility and helping them access financial support.
The team also supports people aged 50+ with housing, care and support, Home Energy Checks, energy efficiency and access to local services. Through independent, confidential and personalised advice, we help older people understand their options, access the right support and improve their wellbeing.
Bringing advice into the community
Bringing our Information and Advice service into local communities across Plymouth will help us reach older people who may otherwise struggle to access support. Not everyone feels comfortable discussing personal matters over the phone, so offering face-to-face advice in familiar community settings provides an alternative way to seek help, ask questions and talk through concerns in confidence.
Martin's story

When Martin first came to Age UK Plymouth, he was looking for advice about applying for a Blue Badge. At 81, his mobility and balance were making everyday journeys more difficult, and he wanted to understand what support might be available to him.
Martin had sadly lost his wife three years prior. Since then, life had become quieter and more difficult to navigate alone. As getting out and about became harder, his world gradually became smaller too.
As we talked through his circumstances, it became clear that he might be entitled to Attendance Allowance. We helped him complete the application and when it was approved, his income was increased by £5,740.70 a year!
For the first time in a long while, Martin felt he had little room to breathe. Instead of constantly weighing up what could wait until another month, he was able to focus on making life easier and more comfortable.
His Blue Badge application was successsful, making it easier for him to get out and about safely. But our support didn't stop there.
A full benefits check revealed that Martin was also entitled to Pension Credit and Council Tax support. Together, these opened the door to further financial help and additional support with everyday costs.
Martin was able to replace furniture that had long seen better days and buy a mobility scooter that gave him greater independence. He could access help with prescription glasses without worrying what it would cost. Things so many people take for granted suddenly felt possible again.
What struck us most, however, was not the financial support. It was the fact that Martin had spent so much time believing he simply had to struggle on his own.
People often come to us with one question and leave with answers they never expected to find. Not because their circumstances suddenly change, but someone takes the time to look at the bigger picture.
For Martin, one of the biggest changes came when his caseworker encouraged him to try our Community Cuppa group. It was not something he would of considered on his own. After several years of spending much of his time alone, walking into a room full of unfamiliar faces felt like a daunting prospect.
Today, Martin is a regular visitor and a well known face around Age UK Plymouth. He thoroughly enjoys his time catching up with people he now considers friends.
Looking back, it is remarkable to think that it all began with a question about a Blue Badge.
Stories like Martin's are exactly why our Information and Advice team exists. We help people understand what support is available and make sure that whatever challenges they are facing - they aren't facing them alone.
