Age UK Plymouth offers a free Home Energy Check for people aged 65 and over who may be struggling to keep their homes warm, or whose health is affected by cold weather.

A visit from our team provides practical, easy to follow advice on how to keep your home warmer for longer and reduce energy use. This may include tips on retaining heat, along with free energy saving equipment such as draft excluders and reflective radiator panels.

Where appropriate, we can also provide information and referrals into the Warm Homes Discount scheme.

As we get older, our bodies become more sensitive to cold, and it can take longer to warm up. Living in a cold home can increase the risk of serious health problems, including heart attacks or strokes and can also worsen existing conditions such as arthritis, asthma and respiratory illnesses.

The government recommends that homes are heated to at least 18C for people aged 65 and over. However, rising energy costs mean this can be difficult for many people, particularly those on low or fixed incomes.

Checking what financial support you may be entitled to

Alongside practical energy advice, it is important to make sure you are receiving all the financial support you are entitled to.

Age UK offers a free and confidential Benefits Calculator, which can help you check whether you may be eligible for support such as the Winter Fuel Payment, Pension Credit or other financial help with heating and living costs.

The calculator is quick and simple to use and can help identify support you may not be aware of. In some cases, being eligible for Pension Credit may also unlock additional help, including the Winter Fuel Payment.
