Join us to stand up to elder abuse

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is marked every year on 15 June. WEAAD encourages us all to speak out, challenge stigma, and promote a society where every older adult is treated with respect, dignity, and compassion.

Elder abuse can take many forms - physical, emotional, financial, sexual, or neglect - and it often goes unnoticed. Many older adults may feel unable to seek help, may not know where to turn, or may be dependent on the person causing them harm.

That is why it is essential to raise awareness, education, and funds to help us support older adults and their families. Read on to find out how you can get involved and support our WEAAD campaign.

2.pngAt Age UK Solihull, we support local older people who may be vulnerable, isolated, or at risk of abuse. We provide advice, safeguarding support, befriending, and more, to ensure that every older person in our borough feels safe, respected, and heard.

But we can’t do this alone. We need your help.

This year, we are asking you to join us and Solihull Safeguarding Adults Board Business Team in raising funds and awareness for this important day.

There are several ways you can get involved, from wearing purple to carrying out an act of kindness, and making a donation to help us continue to be here for older people in Solihull who might be at risk of abuse.

Please donate

How you can get involved:

  • 1. Wear purple for the day

Whether you’re at home, at work, or out in the community – wear something purple on or around 15 June to show your support.

From a whole outfit to a purple t-shirt, wig, scarf, tie or even socks – every little bit helps raise awareness.

Please also make a donation to Age UK Solihull to help us to continue our work with vulnerable older people. Please also tag us in your photos if you're happy for us to share them!

Get creative and have some fun while making a difference. Here are some ideas to get you started:

    • Purple bake sale
    • Purple picnic
    • Dye your hair purple
    • Purple-themed run, walk or cycle
    • Purple dress-down day at work or school
    • Purple crafts session
    • Purple afternoon tea

Ask people to sponsor you or donate to take part in your activity.

  • 3. Do one kind thing

Kindness can change someone’s day, and sometimes their life. Choose one kind thing to do for an older person you know or someone in your community. It could be:

    • A phone call or doorstep chat
    • Helping with shopping or errands
    • Sending a card or small treat
    • Sharing information about how to spot the signs of elder abuse

When you've completed your act of kindness, donate to our appeal and share with friends and family to encourage them to do the same.

  • 4. Make a donation

Even if you’re not able to take part in an activity, you can still show your support by making a donation.

    Your gift will help us:

    • Provide advice and support for vulnerable older people
    • Prevent isolation and abuse
    • Offer advice and practical help when someone feels unsafe
    • Raise awareness across Solihull so more people know the signs of abuse
    • Ensure older people have a voice, and someone who will listen
