Occasional Driving Volunteer

Could you be an occasional driver for Age UK Isle of Wight?
Each month Age UK Isle of Wight holds social events at various locations across the Island. Many of our older community would like to attend these but are unable to due to lack of transport. We currently have a limited number of drivers who can support, but we desperately need more!
We are looking for volunteer drivers Island-wide who can donate as little as one afternoon a month, generally on a weekday, to help us reduce loneliness amongst our older population by transporting them to and back from Age UK IW organised events at various community locations.
What you will get out of it
- Meet new people through our social events that you will be supporting as a volunteer driver
- Feel great about helping isolated older people get out and about and re-engage with the community
- Your travel expenses will be covered, it is just your time and enthusiasm we're asking for!
- No hassle - you won't need any additional insurance cover for this voluntary role

How you might be supporting people
- Picking up clients from an agreed location, usually thier home address and driving them to and from our social events.
- Some of our clients have mobility restrictions. You may need to help them to move thier belongings in and out of the car, such as a handbag, walking stick or umbrella. We will never ask you to lift, carry or transfer a client into your car.
- Enjoying a chat during your drive and actively listening to your client.
- Safeguarding your client by keeping your car safe, secure and driving sensibly. This can also include notifying the office of anything you are concerned about during your time with your client (Covered in induction).
Qualities of a Volunteer Driver
- Welcoming and friendly.
- A sensible and safe driver.
- Good at time keeping - or in circumstances where traffic or delays are unavoidable, understand the importance of letting someone know.
- Good listening skills.
- Take pride in their vehicle.*
*We're not suggesting you need to drive a Rolls-Royce, nor do we expect your car to undergo extensive detailing before every pick up. However, we do ask that your vehicle is kept in a clean and reasonable condition when supporting our clients. A quick tidy-up and regular maintenance for safety is all we ask.
