Get involved this Older People's Day

People across Solihull and beyond are being invited to celebrate older people and raise funds for local charity, Age UK Solihull, to mark Older People's Day on Thursday 1 October.
The annual campaign coincides with the UN International Day of Older Persons - a day that celebrates the contribution older people make to society while challenging outdated stereotypes and negative attitudes towards ageing.
Age UK Solihull is inviting individuals, businesses, schools and community groups to get involved in a way that suits them. Supporters can take part on or around 1 October by:
- Wearing slippers for the day and donating as part of our annual "Slip Into Slippers" campaign
- Joining in with “Hats Off To Older People” and wearing a favourite hat and donating
- Organising a bake sale, quiz night, concert or other fundraising event
- Taking on a sponsored challenge
- Collecting donations as an organisation or community group
- Making an individual donation to the campaign
- Taking time to think about an older person in your life and the contribution they make to our society
Funds raised from the campaign will help us to continue providing essential services for older residents, including befriending, social activities, digital skills training, and other support that helps older people live happily, independently and well.
Rebecca Jacob, Fundraising Manager at Age UK Solihull, says, “We are really excited for this year’s Older People’s Day campaign. It is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate older people while raising funds for our vital services. As a local charity, the support of the community means the world to us and helps make a big difference to older people in the Solihull borough. We would love to see schools, workplaces, community groups and individuals getting involved, whether that’s by wearing slippers or a hat for the day, organising a fundraising event, doing a sponsored activity or making a direct donation. Let’s make this year's campaign our biggest yet!"
The charity hopes the campaign will not only raise much-needed funds but also encourage people to recognise and celebrate the valuable role older people play in local communities.
