Get involved this World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Published on 08 June 2026 03:50 PM

We're inviting local residents, businesses and community groups to come together this June in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), helping to raise awareness of the abuse, neglect and exploitation experienced by older people in Solihull and across the UK, while raising funds to help support older Solihull residents who may be at risk of abuse.

Marked globally each year on 15 June, WEAAD raises awareness of an issue that often remains hidden, but happens everywhere, including here in Solihull. Last year, over 65s made up 65% of safeguarding enquiries made about adults in Solihull who may be at risk of abuse.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including neglect, physical, financial, emotional and psychological abuse, as well as discrimination. Sadly, many older people suffer in silence, often feeling isolated, frightened or unable to speak out.

Age UK Solihull supports older people who may be vulnerable to abuse, offering advice, social interaction, safeguarding support and more.

Through this year’s campaign, Age UK Solihull is encouraging people to start conversations to raise awareness and support our work through donations or fundraising activities.

Our CEO, Anne Hastings, says:

“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an important reminder that every older person deserves to feel safe, respected and valued. Abuse of older people is often underreported, and many people may not realise the different forms it can take. By raising awareness and encouraging simple acts of kindness and support through donations and fundraising, we can help older people feel less isolated and ensure they know they are not alone.”

We're asking supporters to get involved on or around 15 June by:

  • Wearing purple to raise awareness of WEAAD and making a small donation
  • Hosting a purple-themed fundraiser
  • Doing one kind thing for an older person, donating and sharing to encourage others to do the same
  • Making a standalone donation to support local older people

Every donation helps Age UK Solihull continue providing vital support services to older people in the local community.
