Older Islanders

The voices of older people are at the heart of the Age Friendly Island project. There are a number of ways you can get involved to influence change to ensure the Age Friendly agenda is at the forefront of policy, business decisions and development.

Attend a Public Forum​

​Open to all members of the public who have an interest in improving lives of people over the age of fifty. Join us to discuss issues relevant to your life. The agenda is set by the attendees and relevant speakers are also invited.​

Attend a Public Forum: Due to a new funding stream, we are currently developing a new structure of forum delivery, more closely linked to the work of Age UKIW and the Older Person Steering Group. ​Older Person’s Steering Group​

​Made up of 6-12 older people who meet every month to champion the voices of older people. They shape decisions around how the AFI project is run and what activities the programme engages in. The function is to support, challenge and engage. ​

​To become a member of this group, you need to be:​

  • Over the age of 50​
  • A resident of the Isle of Wight​
  • Be willing to advocate for members of the community who may not be able to do so themselves​
  • Offer challenge and support to how the Age Friendly Island Programme develops​.

Current Projects

  • Digital Inclusion

    The group works to encourage organisations to work in a consistent, co-ordinated way, to ensure that people who want to become or remain digitally connected, can do so.

  • ​Environment

    The group provides feedback for how public spaces can be adapted to help with social distancing and ensuring Age Friendly principles are met

  • Employment

    The group is currently focusing on the work of the Centre for Ageing Better’s toolkit.

  • ​Celebrating Age Festival

    The Celebrating Age Festival was last held in 2019 and has been on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year we are linking to the national campaign focusing on Valuable not Vulnerable.
