Prompt action and support

The fantastic support of local people and businesses enabled our emergency shopping and prescription collection service to spring into action and help hundreds of older people living in Milton Keynes who have no one to help them locally. In the first four weeks after 23/3/20 we did 224 shopping trips, collected 81 prescriptions and delivered 92 essential packs of food and household items. We also delivered 306 meal packs.  Providing this emergency support is only possible because of donations to our Covid-19 emergency appeal.

The emergency service is separate to our normal Independent Living Service and we aim to provide help within a couple of days.  We are currently delivering meals packs on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are reviewing the situation as circumstances change.  All our volunteers delivering emergency shopping will have ID and are DBS checked. If you have any doubts at all about someone saying they are from Age UK Milton Keynes, please call us.

The emergency service is separate to our normal Independent Living Service which enables older people to live independently by providing a regular service and for which there is a charge.

Stories from the lockdown

Mrs A  86 years

At the beginning the service was vital as I was not able to go out and do my usual shopping.  It moved me greatly that people would put themselves at risk to help me.  It has helped me a lot and I enjoy seeing the volunteer as I live on my own.

Because of the lockdown the meals have been very welcome.  The service enabled me to know something was always available for lunch, especially if I have had a difficult time coping during the day.  It helped me to manage until I can get some free time to shop for myself when the Peartree Memory Clubs restart, as I cannot leave my husband alone at homne or in the car.

Mr C 96 years

I can't tell you how grateful I was and want to thank the volunteers who have helped me with these deliveries and the lady who did my shopping.  I may not need the service as much when things get back to normal because I can get to the shops by bus and fend for myself.  You did a very good job and the lunch was sufficient for one person and there was no wastage.  The young man who brought the meals was very polite, let him keep up with that attitude.  God bless him.

Mrs D 84 years

I was so lonely and unable to get out.  The hot meal delivery made a huge difference to me.  You bringing the heavy items like dried pasta and vegetables helped ease the anxiety of the early weeks during the supermarket shortages.

The service has been a great help, something nice to look forward to.  It has been a great help being able to talk to the volunteer and I felt less cut off, having no one else to talk to.  It made sure I had a good balanced meals twice a week.
