MCST activity stimulation group
What is MCST?
MCST stands for Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy. The sessions are for people with mild to moderate dementia. It follows the same principles and format of CST (Cognitive Stimulation Therapy), but is a longer programme of 24 weeks. The groups are small, of around 10 people, to allow for everyone to be focused and have space to share their thoughts and opinions. MCST sessions are fun and engaging, with different themes each week and new activities. Themes include: Word Games, Household Treasures, Art Discussion, Food, Sounds and more!
We also run a group for Carers (family, friends, loved ones who support the person attending MCST) at the same time and location. These sessions are supported by Carers Wakefield.
It has been another wonderful year on the MCST programme, full of laughter, fun and friendships. This year we have supported 27 people living with Dementia on the MCST programme and 31 of their relatives and friends in the Carers group, supported, with thanks, by Carers Wakefield.
At the end of the programme we always ask people about their experience and gather feedback. People in the MCST groups have said that they’ve found it a really positive course, helpful and informative. They have enjoyed meeting other people and doing activities together.
The Carers group have said their sessions were very beneficial, informative and enjoyable. They have enjoyed having space to share experiences whilst knowing their loved ones are also engaged in their MCST session at the same time.

“I’ve enjoyed myself. I’ve spoken to lots of people and we’ve helped each other. I looked forward to coming.”
“I’ve liked it, people get more and more comfortable as time goes on. I’ve enjoyed making friends, we have a laugh.”
“My Dad has enjoyed attending the group and I feel he has thoroughly benefitted from the whole experience. I am so grateful he has been given this opportunity. It has been beneficial for both of us.”
“The support has been amazing, my Mum always has a smile on her face at the end.”
“It’s been brilliant. It has been fantastic. It has given a purpose to my Dad, and he has made valuable friends.”
