Dementia action week

Published on 22 May 2026 09:24 AM

This week marks dementia action week as we continue to help raise awareness of dementia whilst also making sure our community is aware of our variety of services we provide in supporting those, wherever they are in their dementia journey.

At Age UK Plymouth, we understand that waiting lists for a diagnosis can put barriers in place to those who are struggling with the first signs of memory loss. Perhaps it is a family member who is becoming increasingly concerned for the wellbeing of their loved one and is looking for some extra support to guide them. We understand these barriers, and proudly offer all our dementia services and support with no diagnosis required.

By 2030, it is estimated that over 5,000 people in our city will be living with the disease. But dementia is happening right now - whether it's a friend of a friend, a neighbour or colleague. This is why we want to make sure our services are as accessible as possible to those who need it.

We provide essential services in Plymouth to those in all stages of their dementia journey. From our Forget Me Nots group for those who are experiencing the first signs of dementia and memory loss, to our Dementia Day Centre, located in Plymstock, offering a safe environment to those who might be a few stages ahead and need that extra support. This service also provides vital respite for carers and family members that need just a few hours or a full day's reset to help them manage other aspects of their daily lives.

Operating from our Dementia Day Centre is our Caring for Carers group, which allows carers the chance to get together with others in the same situation, share stories, share advice and understanding as to what can be a challenging journey.

As we mark dementia action week, we remain committed to ensuring nobody in our community has to face dementia alone. Whether someone is living with the disease themselves, caring for a loved one or looking for guidance and reassurance - we are here to offer support every step of the way. By continuing to raise awareness and encouraging conversations, we hope to create a more understanding community for everyone affected by dementia.
