Local independent charity, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, is helping older people get more from the digital world by building their skills and confidence.

Around one in four people aged 65 and over in the UK do not use the internet. This can make everyday life harder, as many services such as banking, shopping and healthcare are now online. It can also mean missing out on news and ways to stay in touch with family and friends.

Research by Age UK shows the main reasons for this are a lack of skills, low confidence, and limited access to devices or broadband. With support from Shropshire Community Foundation, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is now offering a series of free workshops that are designed to help people feel more comfortable using digital technology.

That’s why we’re asking leaders of community groups, clubs or societies for older people to contact us if they are interested in having a guest speaker to advise their members how to avoid internet fraud.

Jim Hawkins, Wellbeing Services Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “Our Scam Smart programme helps older people feel more confident online. We explain common scams and show simple ways to stay safe. The sessions are especially useful for people who have a smartphone, laptop or computer but aren’t sure how to use it safely.”

If you know a group of people or a medical centre that would benefit from a talk about digital inclusion call Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin on 01743 233 123 or email enquiries@ageukstw.org.uk
