New Trusted companion service launched to support older people

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin have launched a new service aimed at helping older people to remain independent, connected and confident.
The initiative, called Trusted companion, provides practical help, companionship and emotional support to older people across Shropshire, and aims to reduce loneliness and improve overall wellbeing. Research published by Age UK in December 2024 found that 7% of people aged 65 and over are often lonely and 270,000 older people in England go a week without speaking to a friend of family member.
A Trusted companion will deliver non-medical support tailored to individual’s needs. This might include sharing a conversation over a cup of tea, assisting with light household tasks, or accompanying someone to a medical appointment.
Trusted companions can spend time chatting with individuals, joining in hobbies such as crafts, puzzles, or reading, and helping them stay socially connected. They offer a listening ear, providing comfort and support as people navigate emotional challenges or concerns. They can also assist with practical tasks around the home, shopping, collecting prescriptions and preparing simple lunches like sandwiches, or heating a ready meal.
Getting out and about can make a big difference to wellbeing, and a Trusted companion can accompany clients to social activities or on short walks in their neighbourhood or local green spaces.
A key focus is building trusted relationships. Each client receives personalised support tailored to their needs, delivered in a friendly, reliable and confidential manner. All our Trusted companions have undergone DBS checks and provided strong references.
Tracy Reynolds, Head of Help at Home at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “We’ve developed this service based on our understanding of what local older people need to enhance their daily lives and improve their wellbeing. However, I would encourage individuals and families to share their ideas with us about the support they would like.”
