Urgent Appeal for help

Published on 27 March 2020 12:43 PM

Age UK Horsham District is calling on people to donate groceries and other essentials to older people who are housebound during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The charity is collecting items, which it will deliver to people’s doorsteps, to help ensure they have the provisions they need to stay healthy during this difficult time. The collection point is at Lavinia House, Dukes Square, RH12 1GZ and drop off times are between 8.30am – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

As well as delivering groceries and medication, the charity is also providing knitting kits, CDs/DVDs, books and jigsaws to stave off boredom.  Tinned food, long life milk, bread, toilet roll and cleaning products are most in demand.

Simon Dowe, Chief Executive at Age UK Horsham District said “I know shopping is difficult at the moment, but we’re asking anyone who can spare anything to drop it at our centre. We’re working with isolated, lonely and sometimes frightened older people, many of whom don’t have family or friends to rely on.  We’re determined to be there for them but we need the people of Horsham to get behind us every step of the way.”

Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham said “There is a huge amount of volunteering and a determination to help throughout our area.  Not everyone has friends and family close to hand and in these extremely difficult circumstances the more we can help vulnerable people stay safe the better it is for them, for our NHS and for the whole community.  We are all grateful for continuing work of Age UK Horsham District and the support they are providing.”

Age UK Horsham District has quickly adapted the way it works in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. As well as the doorstep deliveries, the charity is offering information and advice, emergency welfare and safety support to the most vulnerable, telephone befriending and wellbeing advice. It is working in close partnership with colleagues at Age UK West Sussex and Brighton & Hove, Horsham Matters and Horsham District Community Transport.
