Resolve to help others in 2023 - local Age UK calls for volunteers to support most vulnerable

Published on 30 January 2023 09:34 AM

Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove (WSBH) is looking for new volunteers to support some of the most vulnerable older people locally during the year ahead. The cost of living crisis is hitting many over 65s hard and Age UK WSBH is needed more than ever.

Volunteers can offer as little as a couple of hours a week, but that time can make a huge difference to older people in the community. Roles on offer vary depending on location and are matched to individuals based on their interests, skills and experience. Examples include supporting people at home after a hospital stay, helping with group activities, getting older people online, supporting those living with dementia, helping people access benefits, providing kitchen assistance or café help at our centres and taking calls from or signposting clients.

Richard Harris, Volunteer Manager at Age UK WSBH said “It’s not too late to make a New Year’s resolution and we’re hoping to encourage people to make an immediate, practical difference by volunteering with us. Things are incredibly tough for some older people in our community right now. The cost of living crisis has pushed many into poverty, leaving them feeling isolated, worried and alone. We want to be there for as many people as possible and we can only do that with the help of our amazing volunteers. If you feel you could spare a little bit of time to make life better for someone who needs us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Volunteering is fulfilling, interesting and sociable. It can also help develop transferrable skills that may lead to other employment opportunities. The charity can also give references. All volunteers have a DBS check, a reference check and ongoing support and training. Potential volunteers are asked to contact the charity as soon as possible, so the relevant paperwork can be undertaken.

Anyone interested in volunteering for Age UK WSBH should contact Volunteer Manager, Richard Harris, ideally by email on or call his direct line on 01273 021 620.
