We need you to make a difference to older people

We are looking for a friendly and compassionate volunteer to help create a warm, welcoming and supportive environment for older people attending our Day Opportunities Group on Tuesdays from 11am to 2pm.

By offering a friendly face, serving refreshments and supporting group activities and lunch service, you'll help older people stay connected, build friendships and enjoy later life. This rewarding role is a great opportunity to make a real difference in your local community. No experience is needed, just a positive attitude and a desire to help others.

To join this rewarding service we ask that you are

  •  Aged 18 or over
  • A caring and confident individual with empathy for older people
  • Able to remain calm and provide reassurance when needed
  • Aware of the importance of safeguarding and personal wellbeing
  • Living locally and able to travel to our Day Centre

About the role:

Full details of the volunteer role will be provided during the recruitment process. Please note that this is a voluntary, unpaid position and does not constitute a contract of employment.

Please note this role is subject to Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.  We are sure that you will enjoy volunteering with us and that you will always feel supported and safe.

What your day could include:

  • Helping to set up the room before the session and pack everything away afterwards.
  • Creating a warm, welcoming environment where everyone feels acknowledged and included.
  • Welcoming participants as they arrive and helping them to settle into the group.
  • Making and serving drinks and helping to create a relaxed, social atmosphere.
  • Supporting the serving of the hot meal for those who choose to stay after the exercise session.
  • Spending time talking with participants, building rapport and supporting connection and wellbeing.
  • Encouraging participants to join in while respecting their individual choices, abilities and comfort.
  • Helping to ensure the room remains safe, comfortable and tidy throughout the session.
  • Clearing tables, washing up and helping to leave the kitchen and activity areas clean and organised.
  • Working collaboratively with the group instructor and the wider team to ensure the group runs smoothly.

Your responsibilities:

  • Dress in a smart but comfortable way that is suitable for the activities you will be carrying out.
  • Be polite, respectful and welcoming to clients, staff, students, fellow volunteers and visitors at all times.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality in line with Age UK Northamptonshire’s policies.
  • Report any incidents, accidents or concerns promptly to the Service Manager or another member of the team.
  • Arrive in good time for your shift. If you are unable to attend, please let the Service Manager know as early as possible. If you cannot reach them, leave a message with the First Response Team using the details provided on the Key Contacts form. Please keep these contact details somewhere safe and accessible.

Important safety information:The safety and wellbeing of clients, volunteers and staff is our highest priority.

  • Volunteers must never attempt to lift or move a client.
  • If a client falls, your role is to provide reassurance, keep them comfortable, and seek assistance from a member of staff immediately.
  • Following this procedure helps protect both the client and you from injury.

Training and support

To undertake this role, you will be required to complete relevant training in line with our policies and procedures before you begin volunteering.
