Act Now, Age Better

People are living longer than ever - which is great news! The bigger question now is how to make those extra years feel good, not just longer.

Age UK's Act Now, Age Better campaign is encouraging people aged 50 to 65 to think exactly about that. How small, realistic changes in how we move can make a big difference over time, helping people stay stronger, healthier and more energised as they age.

It doesn't need to be complicated! Swimming, coastal walks, local classes or even just building more movement into everyday routines all count. There is no single "right" way to do it - the key is finding something that actually fits into real life and feels enjoyable enough to stick with.

The campaign, led nationally by Age UK, is focusing on those small but meaningful changes that can support healthier ageing. In Plymouth, we are supporting locally - helping spread the message across the city. The campaign will be running throughout the summer into September.

The timing of this campaign matters greatly. While people are living longer, many are spending later life in poor health, with physical inactivity playing a major role. Conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia are all linked to low activity levels. On the flip side, regular movement has been shown to support heart health, boost mood, strengthen memory and help people stay independent for longer. The encouraging part is that it doesn't take huge lifestyle overhauls - just consistency!

Locally, Plymouth reflects the national picture. Nearly 40% of adults are not active enough to benefit their own health, and more than 1 in 5 are classed as inactive, doing less than 30 minutes of movement a week. Fewer than 7 in 10 adults meet recommended activity levels, with mid life often being a particularly busy period where activity drops off.

At the same time, our city has plenty to offer. From beautiful coastal walks, community groups and local activities - making it easier to find something that works for your everyday life.

Ultimately, it's not about doing everything at once or getting it right. It's about starting somewhere - even if it might feel daunting! Every bit of movement adds up, and those small steps can make a huge difference over time - helping people feel better now, and stay well in the years ahead.
