Why I love my role as CQC Registered Manager and Safeguarding Lead with Age UK Wakefield District
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to help people.
As a child, I'd spend hours holding "psychological support sessions" with my teddies and my ever-growing collection of Cabbage Patch Kids. Back then, I was convinced I was going to become a psychiatrist.
Life took me in a slightly different direction, and today I'm a CQC Registered Manager in social care. And honestly, I can't imagine doing anything else.
It's challenging. Some days are tough. There are moments when the responsibility feels enormous. But then I remember why I do it.
I get to help create the kind of support I'd want for my own family. I get to help people maintain their independence, have their voices heard, and continue living life on their own terms.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that ageing doesn't mean life is over. Every day I meet people with incredible stories, skills, experiences, and wisdom. I learn as much from them as they do from us.
The best part of my role isn't the paperwork, the meetings, or the inspections. It's hearing how someone's confidence has grown, seeing a person achieve something they thought they couldn't, or knowing that our team has made a genuine difference to someone's life.
Here in the Home Support Service, we're passionate about making ageing better and enabling you to thrive in your own home. We take the time to understand what matters to individuals, because later life should be about living well, staying connected not just surviving.
And that's why, despite the challenges, I still love what I do and I'm proud of the work our team do!
