Couple on a beach

Age UK Barnet is committed to being there for older people who need us. If you decide to leave a gift in your will to us, you will be supporting us to make sure that a local older person in the future gets the help and support they need.

Every single gift  is vital to Age UK Barnet and we appreciate any gift you may choose to leave us. Whatever the value of your gift, it will go a long way to help someone who needs us.

After providing for your family and friends remembering a charity in your will is a very special way to donate to Age UK Barnet. It truly is a gift of a lifetime and will mean that we will be able to carry on the work of supporting older people in the Borough . This support will be even more vital in the future, because as a nation we are growing older. In just 30 years time the UK population aged over 60 will have increased by 50%.

It will not cost you a penny during your lifetime. It is simple to do and is free from inheritance tax.

Supporting Age UK Barnet

If you kindly decide to leave a gift in your Will to us, maybe because we have helped you or a member of your family, please make it clear that you want to support Age UK Barnet, rather than Age UK. Because we are linked to Age UK, the national charity that everyone has heard of, people might think that we are a big organisation, but in reality, Age UK Barnet is an entirely separate, small, local charity and we have to raise our own funds for all the work we do.
This also means that a gift to Age UK will not come to us at Age UK Barnet and will not help us to support older people in the borough with advice, practical help and companionship.

All gifts, whatever their size make a real difference. Thank you.

How to leave a gift in your will

Having a will and keeping it up-to-date helps ensure that your wishes can be respected and your property and assets benefit people and causes you really care about. We would always recommend that you speak to a qualified professional such as a solicitor, when making or amending your will.

Your solicitor will be able to advise you on the required wording to carry out your wishes. If you wish to leave a gift to Age UK Barnet in your will, all you need is our charity details below:

Age UK Barnet, Ann Owens Centre, Oak Lane, East Finchley N2 8LT
and our registered charity number 1144535

If you already have a will

If you already have a will and you want to include a gift to Age UK Barnet in it, there may not be need to rewrite it. You can ask a qualified professional such as a solicitor to add an amendment (called a codicil). As a general rule, if the change you wish to make is quite small or simple, you can use a codicil, and if the change is more significant or complex you should make a new will.

What kind of gift can I leave to Age UK Barnet?

You can leave a specific sum of money or an item such as jewellery or a piece of art. Or you can leave a share in, or all of, what's left of the value of your estate after family and friends have been taken care of. The advantage of leaving a share (also known as residuary gift) is that it remains the same over time, and you won't need to change your will to keep up with inflation.

A residuary gift

'I give the residue of my estate to Age UK Barnet, Oak Lane, East Finchley N2 8LT (registered charity number: 1080458) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive of Age UK Barnet for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift'

For a specific request

'I give the sum of £ (or the item specified) to Age UK Barnet of Ann Owens Centre, Oak Lane, East Finchley N2 8LT (registered charity number: 1080458) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of Age UK Barnet for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift. In all other respects I confirm my said Will'

Adding a codicil to your Will

If you are making a codicil, you should naturally take advice over the precise wording, but here is an example of the wording of a typical codicil:

'I give the sum of  (amount in words and figures) to Age UK Barnet, Ann Owens Centre, Oak Lane N2 8LT (registered charity number: 1080458) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of Age UK East London for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift In all other respects I confirm my said Will. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this (date in words).

Signed by the said (name) the Testator (Testatrix) as and for a (First) Codicil to his (her) said Will dated the (date) in the presence of us both being present at the same time who at his (her) request in his (her) presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.Signatures of Testator (Testatrix) and two Witnesses, plus their addresses'

'I give the sum of £ (or the item specified) to Age UK Barnet, Ann Owens Centre, Oak Lane N2 8LT (registered charity number: 1080458) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of Age UK Barnet for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift. In all other respects I confirm my said Will'
