The UK Government is conducting a second nationwide test of its Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at approximately 3 pm. Nearly all compatible mobile phones and tablets across the country will emit a loud siren sound, vibrate, and display a message for about 10 seconds - even when set to silent mode.

What you need to know:

  • It’s only a test. No action is required.

The system is designed to alert the public to imminent threats - such as flooding, severe weather, fires, or terror-related incidents - and must be tested regularly to ensure it functions effectively when needed. Since its launch in March 2023, the system has delivered real alerts during incidents like Storm Eowyn and local emergencies involving bombs or flooding.

Why this matters for older people

Unexpected alarms can be distressing. For older individuals, especially those living alone, the sudden siren-like noise and vibration may cause anxiety. Age UK Somerset encourages families and carers to share this information and offer reassurance.

Advice for on-the-go situations

If you’re driving when the alert goes off, do not pick up your phone - the law prohibits handling a device while driving, and it can result in a £200 fine and six penalty points  Instead, continue driving safely and check your phone once you're stationary.  You may want to turn the phone off in advance if you know you will be driving, or at the cinema, so it doesn't give you a start!

What Age UK Somerset asks of you

  • Help spread the word - talk to older friends, neighbours, or relatives.

  • Reassure anyone who might be unsettled - it’s just a practice test.
