The Ridings Centre in Wakefield has beaten national competition to scoop a top industry award. The centre was crowned the overall winner at the Revo Purple Apple Marketing Awards, picking up a Golden Apple Award for its Cuppa Club event and work with AgeUK Wakefield District to reduce loneliness amongst older people.

The annual event took place on Thursday, 10th May in London, with over 500 retail property marketing professionals gathering to recognise effective marketing within the UK shopping centre sector.

The Cuppa Club event, which takes place on the first Thursday of every month, provides a welcoming place for guests to socialise and meet new people, whilst enjoying activities like live music and dance workshops. It was commended by the judges for tackling a national issue in a simple way, which has proved extremely popular at a local level.

Centre Director Lee Appleton said, “We are thrilled that a medium-sized centre like The Ridings has scooped such a prestigious accolade and we’re really proud of the work we do to support our older shoppers and help reduce loneliness.”

Paula Bee, CEO of AgeUK Wakefield District said, “The Cuppa Club works at every level and especially as a highly visible reminder to everyone that companionship is the key to tackling isolation and loneliness and this can be free and easy and enjoyable.”
