New! Outdoor Tai Chi

Published on 12 August 2022 03:39 PM

From Tuesday 16th August at 2:30pm our Ageing Well service is starting a brand-new outdoor Tai Chi QiGong class for people over 60.

The programme is based on a form of Tai Chi called QiGong Shibashi, which is made up of 18 mindful movements. The class will meet at the Bandstand at Grove Park for an hour of gentle Tai Chi.

The Ageing Well service are thrilled to offer an outdoor class, particularly as the physical and mental health benefits of spending time outdoors are becoming more and more recognised. Healthline.com reported boosted immune function and improved emotional wellbeing (1). Delivering the class outdoors also means there is lower risk of transmission of COVID (2).

With funding from Sport England’s Together Fund and in partnership with Wesport and Voscur, this project is designed to reduce the negative impact of COVID-19 and the widening of the inequalities in sport and physical activity.

Becky Bostock, manager of the Ageing Well service encourages people over 60 to sign up and give outdoor Tai Chi a try. She said:

‘Tai Chi QiGong is great for your mind, body and wellbeing and the easy to learn routine can improve balance, strength and flexibility. We are delighted to be able to deliver this class outside so our participants get all the benefits of being in nature.’

Pre-booking is essential. In adverse weather the class will not run. To book your place or for more information contact Age UK Somerset’s Ageing Well service on 01823 345624 or email ageingwell@ageuksomerset.org.uk
