Re-ablement Volunteers

The re-ablement project offers support to older people who have come out of acute or community hospitals.  Our Volunteers provide short-term support to help people live independently at home for as long as possible and prevent unnecessary re-admission.  Through providing, or pointing them to services, you will help them to recover and regain their confidence.  Volunteers should enjoy variety and be hapy to visit people in their own homes and be willing to work with us to provide answers to help improve the lives of our older clients.  This is a rewarding role and full training and support will be given.  Click here to read more about Re-ablement

Ageing Well Volunteers - Gentle Exercise Leaders

Three ladies standing in the parkWould you like to help older people in your community to live healthier, happier lives? Most people, whatever their age or condition, benefit from physical activity and this is where our Ageing Well Volunteers come in!  Volunteers lead regular chair-based activity sessions, which usually take place in retirement accommodation.  These are very social and fun events.  Prospective Ageing Well Volunteers should enjoy physical activity, be able to spare a couple of hours each week and have a great sense of humour as having fun in your classes will be of the utmost importance!  No experience is necessary as full training will be provided.  Because of our Volunteers almost 400 older people in Somerset are getting fitter while having fun every week!

Befriending Volunteers

Jean and Susan

Click here to watch our short film showing the difference our Volunteer Befrienders make.

Our Befriending Volunteers improve the quality of lonely and isolated older peoples' lives by providing them with a regular visitor.  Befriending is a good way to Volunteer if you can make a regular commitment to spend time with and listen to an older person. We find that our Volunteers get as much enjoyment from the visits as the clients!

Because of our Volunteers, many older people who live alone in Somerset and North Somerset have a friendly visitor to cheer them up each week!  In North Somerset our Befriending Service is offered in partnership with Alliance Housing.

This is a very popular service and we have a waiting list for Volunteers.  We could really use your help.

Can you help in North Somerset?

Living Better Volunteers

In this worthwhile role in North Somerset, Living Better Volunteers provide support to older people with long term health conditions to help them maintain their health and wellbeing.

In this exciting project Volunteers interact with individuals to help them develop specific parts of their personal care and support plan and work with them to make it happen.  No experience is necessary and full training will be provided.

Partners in Care Volunteers

In this new project with the British Red Cross and the NHS at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital.  The Partners in Care service offers support to patients in hospital with have very little support in place or have no family or friends, and who may have some worries about leaving the hospital or concerns about how they are going to cope once home.

Volunteers may:

  • help people settle in at home
  • arrange for visits or telephone calls following discharge
  • arrange for a benefit check
  • signpost to other information and advice services
  • provide help with attending ongoing medical appointments
  • provide details about local social events and activities

Information and Advice Support VolunteersHelping with problems

After receiving training our Information and Advice Support Volunteers visit older people in their own homes on an as-neccessary basis.  They help clients by providing support and practical help to: apply for the benefits they may be entitled to; tackle a problem; or to speak or their behalf on matters including community care and consumer issues.  The service is offered free to all older people in Somerset and North Somerset. Time-wise, this role is very flexible and full training is given to our Volunteers and refreshed with regular information sessions.  In 2015 our Volunteers helped older people in Somerset and North Somerset to claim more than £2.25m in benefits.

Office Support Volunteers

Do you have a good telephone manner and some experience of using a computer?  Can you spare an afternoon a month, or more?

We are looking for help with some admin tasks eg, phone calls & data entry, to help our office to run more smoothly.  Full training will be given and you will be supported at all times by a member of staff.

Event Champions

Would you like to help us spread the word?  We are looking for friendly, approachable, outgoing Volunteers who, after training, will act as Champions for us on our info stands at events eg, flower shows, talking to people, giving information and handing out leaflets. Could you help?

Poster Putter-uppers

We need help to promote our services. We are looking for Volunteers who would be happy to receive a poster from us from time to time (less than once a month), and then distribute it around their local patch.  You’ll know best where it could go.
This would only take a small amount of your time but would be of great help to us, and it may make a difference to the older people near where you live.  If you’ve got a willingness to help, even if  you’ve not got much free time, we’d love to hear from you.

Volunteer Fundraisers

Each year Age UK Somerset raises money through local community fundraising activities in Somerset and North Somerset. Volunteers are needed to help with these events which usually include a morning or afternoon helping out, maybe collecting money inside or outside a prearranged retail establishment or at an event. Full support is given and the money raised is used locally to help fund our services to older people.  Alternatively if you have any ideas for fundraising or would be happy to hold an event, please contact us.

Better Buddies Volunteers

Better Buddies Volunteers
The Building Better Buddies project aims to train older men as volunteers to encourage and support other older men to live more active and fulfilling lives. This is achieved using the concept of the ‘health and wellbeing buddy’ – somebody who can support, organise and promote activities to others.
The programme offers a unique volunteer training package which will give you the skills, confidence, support and information to develop your buddy role.
