Emma Hardman
What is your volunteer role/s with Age UK Wakefield District?
I am a Home Visit Befriender
If someone asked you what you do in your role with us, what would you tell them, could you give us a brief description?
I visit an older lady once a week for a relaxed chat and a coffee.
How long have you been volunteering with us?
Only a couple of months now
What made you want to volunteer with us?
My Mum died a couple of years ago and my Dad is on his own and as he lives in Ireland I am unable to visit him as much as I would like. My brother lives near him but what got me is when my brother goes on holiday my Dad says he gets lonely as he doesn't really speak to anyone face to face. I then saw a Facebook ad for volunteers to befriend older people who could be lonely like my Dad and thought I could do this
What is the best part of your role?
I know it makes a difference to my lady. She has said she has told people how well we get on and I do look forward to seeing her.
What would you say is the hardest part of your role?
I don't think there is anything hard really - if I had to say anything then it would be just making the time!
Is there a particular moment or story that sticks out from your time volunteering with us?
My lady is moving up to be nearer to her daughter so I won't see her in a couple of weeks. I know she has been waiting to do this for ages but it was really nice when she said to me "I am looking forward to moving back to York but I will really miss you"
If someone told you they were interested in volunteering at Age UK Wakefield District, what advice or encouragement would you offer?
I would say do it. I would say to just think of it that that one hour a week is something someone could be looking forward to and gives them an opportunity to talk to someone face to face - and just be yourself when you go round. It felt strange initially when I had to choose from a list of people (bit like a dating app!) but then you need to make sure you pick someone that fits you so don't be afraid to do that.
How easy did you find the process of applying to volunteer with us through to getting started in your role?
Very easy indeed.
