Growing for Wellbeing Week

Plants growing on a windowsill

There are few things more nourishing for the soul than watching life grow. This Growing for Wellbeing Week we would like to remind everyone that you needn’t have a garden of your own to enjoy growing.

With so many of us Londoners squashed into flats with no outdoor space, the idea of a garden can feel like an impossible dream. Never fear! A packet of brightly coloured flower seeds which can cost as little as 50p, a pot and some soil can soon give you the pleasure of having plants to nurture. Place them on your windowsill and visit them daily to see if anything is coming up, water gently and then those first shoots appear.  Give those little plants encouragement, talk to them, whisper ‘come on I need to see you’ and then finally you will be rewarded for your tender loving care with a pot full of life and colour!

For those keen on cooking, why not skip buying herbs and grow your own this summer?  They look attractive all grouped together in small pots and will never become too large as you cut off bits for your dishes.

“My geraniums go on year after year as do my dianthus and of course the herbs continue to flourish. Try, growing plants, believe you me with a little tender-loving care, your flowers will bloom, your dishes will taste delicious with homegrown herbs and your spirits will be uplifted.”

There are some spare pots at the Age UK H&F activity centre for those who would like to give it a try. You're welcome to relax in our community garden when you visit.
