Combatting Loneliness and Brightening Lives: Loneliness Awareness Week 2023

Published on 12 June 2023 11:00 AM

Loneliness is an epidemic that affects countless older adults in the UK, leaving them feeling isolated and disconnected from their communities. We're dedicated to enhancing later life for those over 50, and during this Loneliness Awareness Week, we strive to shine a light on this pressing issue and inspire action.

Listen to a powerful story that exemplifies the impact of our befriending service. John, an 88-year-old client, recently shared his experience during an interview on BBC Radio London.

In the interview, John candidly discussed the challenges he faced due to loneliness and the transformative impact of our befriending program. He highlighted how his befriender's regular visits and companionship brought joy, laughter, and a renewed sense of connection to his life. John's story is just one example of how addressing loneliness can brighten lives.

Statistics reveal the scope of loneliness among older adults:

  • Over 1.4 million older people in the UK experience chronic loneliness, which can lead to detrimental effects on their mental and physical health
  • Astonishingly, 3.9 million older people rely on the television as their main form of company, highlighting the lack of meaningful human interaction
  • A disheartening 1 in 10 older people feel lonely often or always, and this number has been growing since the beginning of COVID-19

Addressing Loneliness:
We believe that together, we can combat loneliness and create a more connected and compassionate society. Here are some solutions that we provide:

Befriending Programs: We offer befriending programs that match volunteers with older adults in need of companionship. Through regular visits or phone calls, we establish meaningful connections that provide a lifeline of support and understanding.

Social Activities: Engaging in social activities is crucial for combatting loneliness. We organise a wide range of classes, activities and events that bring older adults together, providing opportunities for connection, friendship, and personal growth.

Community Initiatives: Creating age-friendly spaces and promoting intergenerational interactions is key to fostering a sense of belonging. We work tirelessly to build communities where people of all ages feel valued, supported, and connected.

How You Can Get Involved:
Making a difference starts with each of us. Here's how you can join us in the fight against loneliness:

Volunteer: Dedicate your time and become a befriender or assist with organising social activities and events. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities that cater to your skills and interests. By sharing your presence and compassion, you can make a lasting impact on someone's life.
