Greetings from Age UK Bury

Keep Warm

We are very saddened to learn of the death of Barbara Bolton, a Bury resident, and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time. At the inquest, it emerged that Barbara, 87, said she couldn't afford to heat her home and died from hypothermia at Fairfield General Hospital.

We are asking people keep warm through this cold winter and not take chances wit htheir health and wellbeing.

Seek help

We are urging people to make sure they are receiving their full entitlements to benefits. In the borough of Bury there are over 2,000 eligible households not claiming Pension Credit. This benefit can be worth on avarage £65 a week and those receiving it have also recently received extra help with energy costs from the government.

Call us on 0161 763 9030 for a free benefits check and for help in making applications.

If your relatives or friends live elsewhere in the UK, then they can call the free national Age UK Advice Line on 0800 678 1602 for help.

If you're having trouble with the costs of heating your home, we have energy information to help at this link.

Don’t take chances

Hypothermia is caused by prolonged exposures to very cold temperatures. When exposed to cold temperatures, your body loses heat faster than heat is being produced. Lengthy exposures will eventually use up your body's stored energy, which leads to lower body temperature.

Hypothermia is where your body temperature becomes dangerously low (below 35C). Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, cold skin, slurred speech and confusion.

If you think someone has hypothermia, go to A&E, or call 999. It is a medical emergency and needs to be treated in hospital.

The best way of reducing your risk to hypotermia is to keep warm at home.

Visit a warm space

We are keeping the heating on at the Jubilee and at our venues.

A range of Bury venues are opening their doors to help people stay warm.

Speak out

We are also calling on the government to do more to protect the most vulnerable in our society from the escalating costs of energy.

Please write to your local MP and ensure they are aware of the struggles you are facing.

Please sign the Age UK letter calling for action on energy - https://campaigns.ageuk.org.uk/page/120547/petition/1

Keep an eye on your friends

Your support to your family and friends is invaluable at this time. Share this information and encourage others to take the risk of hypothermia very seriously.
