I hope you and your loved ones are well.

After 535 days of being closed for activities, The Jubilee Centre held its first Tai Chi session indoors yesterday. Next week will see the return of twenty activities at the Jubilee and we plan to end with the week with our massive “Let’s Celebrate” event.

Part One: Coronavirus in Bury

As of Thursday 2nd September, 291 people per 100,000 tested positive for coronavirus over the last 7 days – that is an increase of 9% from the previous week. On the same day, the England average was 301.1 people testing positive per 100,000 over the last seven days– a decrease of 9% from the previous week’s figure.

During August, cases in Bury have remained at a constant level but it is not as low as it should be! However, Bury has avoided having any massive spikes, unlike places like Cornwall or Glasgow.

We have not beaten the virus yet and it has the potential to return. In reopening our activities and services, we are keeping a close watch on local infection figures, recognising that we may have to close down, if infection levels rise rapidly.

Please help us to stay open by not coming to the Jubilee Centre if you are unwell. We are asking everyone to use the sanitiser provided and be considerate in giving each other space.

All young people in Bury aged 16 and over are now able to get a Covid jab and get protected against coronavirus. Please urge your young family members to get the jab. Information about vaccinations, getting a test for Covid-19 and links to government advice are now found on our Coronavirus page

New: Digital Skills Drop In Sessions - Powered by Bury Adult Learning

We have all increased our usage of devices over the last 18 months, and our aim is to help you be more confident and learn new skills to make the most of your device. Whether you need help sending emails, assistance making video calls to family and friends, or help with ordering shopping online, we have the expertise for you.

Pop into one of our drop in sessions and our friendly volunteers will be here to help.

This will run every Wednesday at the Jubilee Centre, Mosley Ave, BL9 6NJ from 11am, starting Wed 8th September.

Feedback from Tai Chi sessions

This week, Sue ran her two Tai Chi sessions inside the Jubilee Centre. On Thursday, we welcomed 17 people and on Friday, 6 people. So, if you are wanting a little more space, come along to the Friday session which now starts at 10.45.

The Jubilee Centre Cafe

Our café is open next week from 10 to 4.00, Monday to Friday.

Our Charity Shops

Our Ramsbottom charity shop is open from 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday to Sunday and our Bury charity shop is now open on Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.

We are unable to collect donations at the moment, but we can accept over-the-counter donations if you are able to bring them to the shop. Readers of this newsletter can also bring donations to the Jubilee Centre between 10 and 2.30 and we will get them to the shops.

We are asking our shoppers to wear facemasks and keep their distance from others. We really need our staff and volunteers to stay healthy and our shops to stay open.

Our services

During the pandemic, we are keeping essential support services open. These include:

Let’s Celebrate!

Our “Let’s Celebrate” community fun day will be on Saturday 11th September, from 11.00 to 4.00.

If you have any items we can use for tombola’s, raffles or stalls, please bring them to the Jubilee Centre between 9.30 and 4.00. A big thank you to everyone who has already donated goods.

Ambition for Ageing have kindly supported our application to support the day. As a result, we have now become the proud owners of a Marquee which will support Saturday’s event, if we work out how to put it up! We have also produced banners advertising the event, which have been put up at key points around the Clarence Park.

Part Three: And in other news

Remind the Prime Minister to #KeepYourPromiseBoris

Two years after his promise to “fix social care for good”, we are still waiting for the Prime Minister to deliver the social care reforms so many of us desperately need. As we approach the autumn, the Prime Minister has a pivotal opportunity to make good on his promise and announce proposals for reforms.

We need to keep the pressure on the Prime Minister, so we are asking our supporters to tell Boris Johnson who he needs to keep his promise for. It could be a neighbour, your grandparents or your own parents. You can tell the Prime Minister who he needs to deliver social care reforms for with this petition. If we can send thousands of personalised stories to the Prime Minister, we will be impossible to ignore.

100 Club – August winners

Today, we can announce August winners in our 100 Club.

For the August draw, we had 48 members. The winning numbers are:

  • 1st prize: No 27 - Anonymous
  • 2nd prize: No 23 - Betty Steed
  • 3rd prize: No 35 - Pauline McCann

The numbers were chosen using a computerised random number generator and independently verified. As we are late with this announcement, the cheques should already be with our winners now.

There are plenty of numbers to purchase and if you would like to join for next month’s draw, please call us on 0161 763 9030 and we will send you a brochure. Alternatively, click on this link: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/bury/get-involved/100club/

The Weekly Quiz

Sneaky gremlins from outer space attacked the Age UK Bury offices and ruined the Quiz we sent out on 20th August. Well done to those who spotted the mix up!!

To put things right, the proper Questions for 20th August are in this link and the right Answers for 20th August are in this link.

The answers to last week’s Quiz (dated 27th August) is in the link.

This week’s Quiz brings you another 30 questions to test your knowledge. This quiz is just for you and your friends to enjoy. The right answers will be sent out with next week’s newsletter.
