Gordon Prime

10th February 2023 is sadly the funeral date of Gordan Prime (1924-2023) in Narberth. Gordon was one of our three D-Day veterans Age Cymru Dyfed supported for some years who passed away the morning of 23 January. Gordon had initially been referred into our Veterans Archive Project as a WW2 veteran living in West Wales.

Remembering Gordon

Formerly of Jameston, Pembrokeshire, Gordon Prime was a Despatch Rider veteran of D-Day and a survivor of significant battles throughout Northern European until German surrender in May 1945.  More recently Gordon spent his time at Haven Care Home in Pembroke Dock where he sadly died on 23 January 2023 aged 98. Hugh Morgan of the Veterans Project, Age Cymru Dyfed, got to know Gordon well and said,

“We’re proud to have both known Gordon and to have worked with him, and he had a terrifically supportive family.  He was always open and keen to talk to us about his story as a Despatch Rider during WW2. There’s now an extensive collection of Gordon’s audios, filmed interviews and material on the West Wales Veterans Archive website as a result. I know first-hand that he greatly appreciated our charity’s engagement with him  and in particular the support of Age Cymru volunteer, Caroline Hayley. He is sadly missed.”

In 2020, Gordon told his remarkable story as a WW2 Despatch Rider to the West Wales Veterans Archive, operated by Age Cymru Dyfed in the ‘People’s Collection’ at the National Library of Wales. You can hear Gordon speaking on his experiences here: Gordon Prime | Peoples Collection.

Gordon’s book ‘Bash on Regardless’ was launched at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre on 3 October 2022 and immediately sold out.
