Bringing Veterans Together: Age Cymru Dyfed’s Veterans Team Connects with the Aberystwyth Community

Age Cymru Dyfed’s Veterans Team recently visited Tesco Aberystwyth to raise awareness of its National Service online archive and encourage more veterans to get involved in its popular veterans’ social group.
On Thursday 24 September 2026, veterans supported by Age Cymru Dyfed’s Aberystwyth Veterans Social Group joined Veterans Field Officer Neil Davies and Tesco Community Champion Helen Vardy for an information stall at the store.
The event provided an opportunity to share news of the newly launched National Service online archive, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project helps preserve and share the stories and experiences of those who undertook National Service, ensuring their memories remain accessible for future generations.
As well as promoting the archive, the team was keen to encourage more veterans to join the Aberystwyth Veterans Social Group. The group offers a welcoming and friendly space for veterans to meet, socialise and connect with others who share similar experiences. It meets every Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm in the community room at Tesco Aberystwyth.
The stall attracted plenty of interest, with many people stopping to find out more about the project and chat with the team. One particularly memorable moment was when a former National Archivist praised Neil for the National Service project, providing a welcome recognition of the work involved.
Supporting veterans and keeping their stories alive
Events like this highlight the important work of Age Cymru Dyfed’s Veterans Team. Through projects such as the National Service archive and local veterans’ social groups, the team helps preserve veterans’ experiences, tackle social isolation and create opportunities for veterans to connect with one another.
