Mervyn Rees Shares His National Service Story Live on BBC Radio Wales

Age Cymru Dyfed is delighted to celebrate the recent BBC Radio Wales interview with Mervyn Rees, who shared his experiences of National Service live on air with presenter Oliver Hides on Friday 11 September 2026.

Mervyn took part in Age Cymru Dyfed’s National Service project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which aims to capture, preserve and share the stories of those who experienced National Service.

After learning about Mervyn’s experiences through the project, BBC Radio Wales invited him to appear on its Phone In programme, giving him the opportunity to share his story with a wider audience.

Mervyn was proud to represent the project and work alongside Age Cymru Dyfed to help communities better understand what National Service meant to those who experienced it.

Keeping veterans’ stories alive

At Age Cymru Dyfed, we recognise the importance of listening to and preserving the experiences of veterans. Every story offers a valuable insight into the past and helps future generations understand the personal impact of National Service.

Mervyn’s interview is a wonderful example of how sharing these experiences can raise awareness, spark conversations and ensure veterans’ voices continue to be heard.
