Help Barnet become age-friendly

Published on 27 June 2023 08:47 AM

We are pleased to announce that Barnet has been accepted into the UK Network of Age-Friendly Communities - a growing movement led by the World Health Organisation.

An Age-Friendly Community is a place that enables people to age well and live a good later life - somewhere that people can stay living in their homes, take part in activities they value and contribute to their communities for as long as possible.

The Age-Friendly Community initiative in Barnet is being led by Age UK Barnet and supported by Barnet Council.

Age UK Barnet CEO Helen Newman says, ‘We are delighted to have been accepted to be part of this network. Barnet's population of over 65s is set to rise by 55 per cent over the next 20 years and it makes sense for us to get ahead of the curve to help improve outcomes and therefore the wellbeing of our whole community.’

‘Barnet is already a great place to grow older but we know we can make it even better and, to achieve this, we must keep listening to older people.’

Barnet Council executive director of communities, adults and health Dawn Wakeling agrees, ‘We want to give local people the opportunity to really have their say in shaping our communities going forward.’

To kickstart the project, Age UK Barnet is seeking the views of Barnet residents. ‘We want to know what we are currently doing well in Barnet and where there is room for improvement,’ says Helen. ’We will then gain a better understanding to the current barriers to ageing well within our community.’

The results of this research will help us build a strategy to enhance and improve community life in Barnet in areas such as housing, outdoor spaces and social inclusion.
