Greetings from the Jubilee!
I hope you and your loved ones are well and safe. This week’s newsletter includes information about the campaign to fix social care, our online activities and foot care service, the latest in government guidance and a clever app that will make communicating with people who are deaf a whole lot easier.
Fix Care
Boris Johnson promised to fix care a year ago when he became Prime Minister. This is more important than ever. He must keep his promise and rebuild a care system that works for everyone.
Our national partner, Age UK digitally handed in a petition today at No. 10 calling for care that is free, fair and available to everyone when they need it.

Face covering guidance
Face coverings are now compulsory on all public transport, and in Bury Interchange, tram stations, shops, supermarkets, indoor shopping centres, banks, building societies, and post offices.
As Chief Officer of a charity that runs two charity shops, I really welcome this. People like to come into our shops and touch clothing, browse through the books and flick through the CD & DVDs. Whilst we can provide hand sanitiser, I know that the greatest risk of infection is when people breath, cough or sneeze over items. Face coverings massively reduce the risk of infection, and it gives increased protection to staff and volunteers working in shops.

Google Live Transcribe
A new app has been created to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing to have conservations in real time. With Google Live Transcribe, the words you speak appear on your Android phone in real time.
Google research scientist Dimitri Kanvesky and engineer Chet Gnegy created this and in this video, they explain how their application empowers people to communicate better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLCwjIaPXwA&feature=youtu.be

Care Homes
The Government is now allowing one person per family to visit a loved one in a care home. However, this is only guidance and each care home has the final say about people visiting.
Please check with the care home before you turn up.
Foot Care Appointments
Dougie, our Foot Care Practitioner, will be at the Jubilee Centre from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm on Tuesday 4th August 2020. Each appointment costs £20. Please call in advance to make an appointment. Call 0161 763 9030, Monday to Friday, from 10.00 to 2.00.
We will ensure that the room and service follows Covid 19-Secure guidelines for your personal safety and wellbeing. Please note the cafe and Jubilee centre will still be closed – we are only opening up for the foot care service.
Online Activities
Diana will next be live on our Facebook page on Monday and Wednesday next week.
- Monday: 11.00 to 11.30 am: Gentle Exercise / Seated and Standing
- Wednesday: 11.00 to 11.30 am: Pilates
These sessions are free and many thanks to Diana for setting them up. Please tell your friends they are welcome to join us. If you can’t make these times, Facebook will let you watch at a later time. Join us at https://www.facebook.com/ageukbury/
Sue holds a Tai Chi class online on Fridays at 11.00 am. This class is aimed at those who attend the 12.15 Tuesday class and 11.00 Friday class at the Jubilee. Opening Up
We are still on course to opening up the Jubilee Centre Café & our shops from mid–August.
We had some great news this week from our national partner, Age UK as they have awarded us a grant to purchase items to ensure the centre is Covid-19 secure and increase cleaning in all common areas. More details soon.

Our Keeping in Touch telephone service offers older people in Bury a regular friendly phone call from one of our volunteers.
