On Monday 21st April 2026, Age Cymru Dyfed Veterans Officer Neil Davies attended the funeral of Mr Ernie Hughes of Penparcau at Aberystwyth Crematorium, paying tribute to a man whose life and service left a lasting impression on all who met him.

Ernie served in the Royal Air Force between 1952 and 1957, including time as a firefighter in Kenya during his National Service. His experiences, like those of many veterans of his generation, offer an important insight into a period of history that continues to shape the lives of individuals and communities today.

He also holds a special place in the work of Age Cymru Dyfed’s Veterans Team, as the very first participant to be interviewed for The National Service Project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Through this project, Ernie generously shared his memories, helping to preserve the stories of veterans across West Wales for future generations.

Ernie’s memoirs will be featured as part of the project’s launch in June 2026. As part of the West Wales Veterans Archive, visitors will be able to hear Ernie recount his time in service, including his role as an RAF firefighter in Kenya — a powerful reminder of the dedication and experiences of those who served.

This work ensures that voices like Ernie’s are not forgotten. By capturing and sharing these personal histories, the project honours the contributions of veterans while helping others better understand their experiences.

In memory of Ernest Hughes (1933–2026).
