Older people and jury service

Published on 20 August 2013 09:00 AM

Age Cymru has welcomed today's announcement by that people up to the age of 75 will soon be able to sit as jurors in England and Wales.

Commenting on the news, Age Cymru's Head of Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis says:

"Age alone is not and never can be an indicator of a person's ability.

"The idea that someone becomes unable to make important decisions just because they are older is outdated and ageist.

"We all have our own unique skills and knowledge and with our ageing population it is increasingly important that we allow older people to lead fulfilling, active lives by contributing to society.

"As the saying goes ‘With age comes wisdom', so what better way of making use of the experiences and life skills that older people have than by letting them sit on a jury?"
