More than 50% of us haven’t thought much about our hopes or ambitions for life after 60. Yet a high sense of control over this life transition results in better outcomes once in retirement.
Business in the Community’s Mid-Career Review Webinars offer an opportunity for you to reflect and consider inter-linked areas of your life and start planning for a positive future. These free webinars provide an overview of four keys areas: job/career, health and wellbeing, finance and work-life balance to help you feel more confident and informed about choices you may want to make. The webinars are part of the Age at Work programme, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and you must be aged 50+ and over and either in employment or actively seeking employment to participate.

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – Age at Work: Over 50s Survey Responses and Recommendations (June 2020)
The Age at Work team carried out an online survey in June 2020, across the three nations, to identify what health and wellbeing and employability topics are important to older workers, and to identify the best online method to support individuals and businesses to address these topics. The recommendations have considered a range of stakeholders, including businesses, individuals, and partner organisations.
Key findings from the survey include:
- 68% of all respondents wanted some kind of change regarding their current employment situation, either changing roles, companies or sector. This desire for a change in role, companies or sector is noteworthy as the majority of respondents (72%) are currently employed, with 14% unemployed and 14% economically inactive
- 96% of respondents identified Health and Wellbeing as very important
- Employability skills are a priority with 46% of respondents stating that Skills Assessment, and 45% stating that Interview Skills/Techniques, are very important topics
- Nearly half of all respondents across the three nations said a Mid-Career Review was very important to them.
There are many benefits of an age diverse and inclusive workplace. Business in the Community encourages businesses to use this self-assessment age audit tool to identify gaps in relation to being an age-inclusive and age-friendly employer. It will help assess how friendly your business is in relation to supporting your older workers; and you can use the results to help you develop an age inclusive action plan. The Age at Work programme manager will review your completed self-assessment and send you a short, bespoke report with suggested actions and other support available.
By developing an effective age inclusive action plan, linked to your wellbeing strategy, your business and its workforce can benefit from a better work-life balance, increased retention, enhanced staff engagement and more satisfied and productive workers. The Business Age Inclusive Audit is offered free as part of the BITC’s Age at Work programme, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and delivered in partnership with Age Cymru. This Toolkit provides a guide for employers to support staff over the age of 50 in relation to 4 key areas: Financial Wellbeing, Health and Wellbeing, Work-life Balance and Workplace Practices and complements the Business Age Audit. Although primarily developed for older workers, this Toolkit contains recommendations for good practice that can be utilised and applied to all staff, regardless of age. BITC Cymru will bring together a small group of HR, wellbeing and inclusion professionals to learn from each other, share best practice and provide support to help businesses develop an Age-Inclusive Action Plan. All participating employers will be required to complete the Business Age Audit. Each meeting will be facilitated by an experienced professional with a guest speaker at each session. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all sessions will take place online.
The Learning Network will meet approximately once a month and will consist of five sessions of no more than two hours each.
