£2.2 million advice funding welcomed

Published on 26 June 2015 10:00 AM

Age Cymru has welcomed today's announcement by Welsh Government Communities Minister Lesley Griffiths of £2.2 million funding to provide advice services for vulnerable people across Wales.

Commenting, our Head of Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis says:

"Good quality and up to date information is essential to help people make choices about everything from everyday issues to difficult and potentially life changing decisions.

"Without access to accurate information and high quality independent advice - such as the type provided by Age Cymru and its network of local charity partners across Wales, older people can be at risk of missing out on financial entitlements, being marginalised and isolated, or experiencing discrimination.

"It can be challenging to navigate complex systems such as health, social care or the benefits system and these challenges can be exacerbated by changes in personal circumstances as people age, such as illness, loss of independence or bereavement.

"Support which helps people to access information and understand the implications of decisions  can be vital and without this support, people can lose out on essential services or entitlements with a detrimental impact on their health and wellbeing."
