Call for more 'No Cold Calling Zones'

Published on 15 July 2015 09:00 AM

Age Cymru is calling today for more protection for older people in Wales from scams.

The National Assembly for Wales is set to discuss ways of protecting older people from scams, such as the creation of No Cold Calling Zones.

Swansea East AM Mike Hedges will be leading the debate as part of Scams Awareness Month - a nationwide initiative to try to highlight the dangers of scams to everyone, especially vulnerable people and their families.

Mr Hedges believes No Cold Calling Zones should be created across the whole of Wales to help protect older and vulnerable people against doorstep crime and rogue traders.

No Cold Calling Zones currently cover just over 50,000 homes in Wales out of a total of 1,300,000.

Age Cymru believes the guidelines for setting up these zones are too costly and time-consuming and need to be drastically revised.

"They were created nearly a decade ago and are out of date," said Gerry Keighley, Age Cymru's campaigns officer.

"With the universal use of the Internet and other electronic media there is no reason for reputable traders to be knocking on doors looking for business.

"There is still far too much rogue trader activity and doorstep crime in Wales and vulnerable people need to be protected."
