Care home workers prosecution

Published on 06 January 2011 01:30 PM

Responding to two care workers being given suspended prison sentences for abusing older people in their care at Cardiff Crown Court today, Louise Hughes, Elder Abuse Programme Manager for Age Cymru says:

"This was an appalling case of elder abuse - a betrayal of the trust of vulnerable older people who were dependent on others for their care.

"Age Cymru is reassured that this case went to court and that it resulted in a successful prosecution.

"It is vital that sentences reflect the severity of the crimes that have been committed and the law must reinforce the message that it will not tolerate elder abuse and that older people must always be treated with dignity and respect.

"Society must demonstrate that it will not tolerate elder abuse and Age Cymru would encourage anyone who suspects that someone they know is being abused, or if they themselves are being abused, to report the matter to the police and social services."
