Nordic Walking mini-site

Published on 18 May 2012 08:00 AM

We have launched a new mini website to coincide with World Nordic Walking Day on Sunday 20 May.

The mini-site has a diary of Nordic Walking events across Wales and information about the physical benefits of Nordic Walking.

It contains a section about Nordic Walking poles - including different types of poles; advice on buying Nordic Walking poles and how to adjust them for correct height and comfort.

The mini-site also includes contact details for the Age Cymru Nordic Walking Programme and Molly's story - one person's account of how Nordic Walking changed her life.

Age Cymru's International Nordic Walking Federation-accredited Nordic Walking Coach Glenn Little says:

"Age Cymru's Nordic Walking Programme is marking World Nordic Walking Day by launching our new Nordic Walking mini-site.

"We've designed it to give you all the information you need to get started with Nordic Walking, which is one of the fastest growing forms of physical activity in Europe.

"The mini-site will also allow you to stay in touch with what's happening and find out about Nordic Walking events that you can join across Wales."

Nordic Walking involves walking with a pair of lightweight, specially-designed poles that provide you with extra support while also increasing the effectiveness of the exercise.

It also allows you to burn more calories than ordinary walking at the same speed - you can burn up to 400 calories per hour with Nordic Walking, compared with 280 calories per our walking normally.

Glenn Little comments:

"Nordic Walking is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels and it exercises 90 per cent of your muscles, making it is an ideal form of exercise for over 50s.

"It also less tiring than normal walking and so you will be exercising harder but still feel comfortable, which again is suited for people who are unable to walk quickly.

"Please visit the new mini-site and find out more about Nordic Walking, how to get involved with Nordic Walking, and Nordic Walking activities in your area."

The Age Cymru Nordic Walking Programme works in partnership with British Nordic Walking as part of the International Nordic Walking Federation.
