Postcards of Kindness

Women reading postcards

The kindness of strangers

Sending postcards to older people is a great way to make an older person's day and spark conversations, as we discovered on a recent visit to a care home.

Postcards of Kindness is an initiative that asks people to write and send postcards to residents of care homes. And while it’s a small gesture, the resulting deliveries bring a great deal of joy and spark lively conversations among the older people who receive them.

We visited a care home in Essex where residents read through postcards full of good wishes and tales from their new contacts' adventures all over the world.

Befriending services

One way to combat loneliness in later life is through Age UK's befriending services, whether that's on the telephone or face-to-face at local Age UKs across the country.
