How we are helping older veterans

Joining Forces logoHave you, or a family member, served in the armed forces? Our new project is here to help older veterans.

What is Joining Forces?

Joining Forces is a Ministry of Defence-supported project which aims to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of veterans (anyone who has completed at least 1 day of military service) born before 1950 and their family and carers.

Who's involved?

Age UK is partnering with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, to deliver 12 local projects across England, which will involve a partnership between the local Age UK and local SSAFA branch offering face-to-face conversations with older veterans and their family or carer.

The projects are taking place in Cheshire East, Darlington, Gloucestershire, Lancashire, Leicestershire & Rutland, Nottingham & Nottinghamshire, Portsmouth, Tyne & Wear, West Cumbria, Wirral, Wolverhampton, and Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Joining Forces is supported through the Aged Veterans Fund funded by the Chancellor using LIBOR funds.

How you can be part of the project

Visit the Joining Forces website hub

Age UK has created a website hib with information tailored to older veterans and their family or carers. It's the go-to-point for advice and support ranging from information about military pensions, contact details on how to apply for badges and medals, and how to get involved with different elements of the project.

Edward and Mike's story

At Age UK, we help beat loneliness through our befriending services. Our telephone befriending service, Call in Time, matches volunteers with older members of the public. As part of the Joining Forces Project we try to match older people with another veteran - like Edward and Mike. If you are interested in taking part in Call in Time, you can sign up on our website.
