Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government scheme offering help with the cost of installing low carbon heating systems such as heat pumps and biomass boilers. If you live in a rural area or off the gas grid, you can get a grant of between £2,500 and £7,500, depending on the technology you choose.

To be eligible, your property must have a fossil fuel heating system such as oil, gas, direct electric or liquified petroleum gas (LPG), and you’ll need an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. You can't get help to replace an existing low-carbon heating system.

You can’t get a BUS grant for most new build properties, social housing or for a property that’s already been given government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler.

BUS is available in England and Wales. To apply, you’ll first need to find a Microgeneration Certification Scheme installer. They’ll advise on whether the works are eligible for a grant and apply on your behalf.

Warm Homes: Local Grant (WH:LG)

The Warm Homes: Local Grant (WH:LG) provides energy efficiency upgrades and low carbon heating via local authority funding, at no cost to the occupant.

You may be able to get a WH:LG if:

• your home is privately owned – either by you or your landlord
• you are on a low income
• have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for your home, rated between D and G.

If your household earns more than £36,000, you might still be eligible if either:

• you live in an eligible postcode area
• someone in your household is getting a qualifying mean-tested benefit, such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit or Housing Benefit

Upgrades could include things like insulation, solar panels, smart controls or an air source heat pump. They’re subject to a home survey and should be tailored to your household.
