Age UK and Quingo raise the bar for scooter safety

Published on 27 June 2013 10:30 AM

Age UK working with Quingo are raising the bar for mobility scooter customers by launching their new driver safety check, a free safety assessment with every test drive of their exclusive 5 wheel scooter range.

It will officially be launched at the annual Mobility Roadshow in Telford today. In the last five years the number of mobility scooters in use has increased by on average 50,000 each year ii. There is an estimated 300,000 mobility scooters in use in Britain. With an ageing population the demand for mobility vehicles is likely to increase. This is why Age UK, the national charity for older people has teamed up with Quingo, leading scooter specialists to promote safe, comfortable and confident scooter use.

Together, Age UK and Quingo, in line with Department for Transport guidelines have devised the ‘Blue Diamond Driver Check'. It includes a sight and capability assessment in line with the checklist set by Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to help build vehicle handling skills and confidence. The checks are offered as standard with every test drive of the Quingo range and again on delivery.

Helena King, Head of Affinity at Age UK, said: "Our aim is that the ‘Blue Diamond' will become a recognisable symbol for safe scooter drivers and general mobility safety. We elected to partner with Quingo because they offer a uniquely safe product and share our commitment to scooter safety and quality. It is important that people are sold the right vehicle to match their needs and they are given this level of care to ensure safety."

Mark Nicholls, Managing Director of Forever Active, the UK's exclusive distributor of Quingo said: "We are thrilled to be working with Age UK. The innovative design of the 5 wheel Quingo offers vastly enhanced stability, agility and comfort to its user. These are all extremely important factors for people with chronic mobility restrictions who wish to remain independent. We know from our customer satisfaction surveys that customers feel safe and stable with Quingo and when they are confident, they actually use the scooter more, something we are very happy about."
