An enabling service

Community Connections is an enabling service that helps people to remain independent in their own homes and helps them to feel part of their community.

Our aim is to help each client find simple, practical ways to stay engaged with life in the local community, and to help equip them to cope with the changes they are facing in their day-to-day life.

By supporting people and building up their skills and self-confidence, we can fight loneliness and help stop people feeling isolated.

The volunteer connector's role

Volunteer connectors will work with individual clients for a period of six months, to help them with a particular challenge or an aspect of their life they are finding difficult. Alongside companionship and conversation, each volunteer connector will offer practical support to help the client remain independent and socially active.

The volunteer connector's role may include:

  • support for people who have had a significant life change, such as illness or bereavement
  • support for people who lack self-confidence
  • relieving loneliness and isolation by providing company
  • helping to improve the mental wellbeing of individuals living alone
  • introducing people to new activites or clubs
  • support and encouragement whilst out and about

Our volunteers

All of our volunteers are DBS checked, and also provide us with two character references. They are required to undertake a full induction training programme, as well as completing adult safeguarding training.

Once the relevant checks and training are completed, we then match our volunteers to a suitable client based on location and shared interests.

If you have some spare time and think you would enjoy supporting us improve the lives of older people in our community, you can find out more about volunteering here

Peer befriending

We are hoping to set up a peer befriending service, where clients will be supported to visit one another in their homes to offer friendly regular conversation whilst building lasting companionship.

If you or someone you know might benefit from our Community Connections service, or alternatively if you think you could offer someone some of your time as a peer befriender, please call 01884 255369 for more information, or email us using the form below.
